Volume 3 in the series of guest mixes, So Soulful comes with the smoothest soul and R&B mix I’ve heard in a long time… An expert selector and blender, and loyal supporter of homegrown and up-and-coming talent, his Saturday Soul Sessions radio podcast is consistently in the Top 10 chart on iTunes, and a regular flow of high profile artists appearing and performing for him ensures his mixtape series is hugely popular (available to download for free over on MixCloud).

One of the nicest and most under-rated DJs in the UK. Seriously!

Catch him weekly on The Soul Of London Radio, and bi-weekly on Unity 101 FM.

Concluding 2011′s release of the 6-track ’2am Sessions EP’, up-and-coming musician/producer/composer Ahmed Sirour has added 6 more tracks to the package to release it as a 12-track LP, before moving on to his next project.

The LP version includes a track which features the delightful vocal talents of Cleveland Jones, who you may remember worked with Ahmed for the track ‘Sensitive’ which featured on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Bubblers 7 last year.

You can purchase The 2am Sessions LP from Ahmed’s BandCamp page.

New from Jeremy Sylvester, featuring Brixton-based vocalist Hustler Spirit, this package features house, garage, electro, dubstep and drum’n'bass versions of the track which should be enough to keep any dancefloor happy.

Look out for the planned ‘Urban Dubz invasion’ later this year, as the push for exposure heightens around the release of the Hooligan Soul album.

Firstly, you’ll notice from reading the text just under the heading of this post that I’m not kense! I’ve invaded, for one night only, to give you all a heads up about my man Danny…

It’s been a long time coming but trust me, I’m excited that the Altered Natives is coming back to Birmingham. Round one was in 2008 when I brought him up to the Midlands. If you were there, that night would’ve been etched in your memory forever. Everyone present knew that this artist with a “bagful of dubplates” was going places and he certainly has. From the USA, Canada, Austria, Germany, Italy… (I’ll stop as I could go on for ages) he’s brought his underground sound to the masses.

Crossing genres from House, Techno, Dubstep, Broken Beat and Hip Hop, he is impossible to pigeon hole. He’s also one of the most hilarious men you’ll ever meet – check his YouTube channel and Twitter feed

‘Rass Out’ appealed to many a scene (with that driving bassline how could you ignore it?). ‘God Made Me’ is a slice of D&B-inspired bruk, while ‘Heavenly Melodies’ is a soulful house favourite. One thing is for certain: this guy has talent. He was rightfully awarded a 10/10 by DJ Magazine for his relentlessly heavy album ‘Tenement Yard Vol 1′, which was a historical first for the magazine!!!

Over the next few weeks you’ll be able to see him spin at a few prestigious events including FabricLive, the Red Bull Music Academy with Martyn, and of course on Sunday 27th May at Rogue Soul for round two. Five copies of his latest album ‘The Guild Of Synchronists’, which is a compilation of tracks from the ‘guild’ of new producers that he’s exposing (At One, El Sudor, Ceramic, Misery Peat, DD Black, Grayz, and my bro Funksta), will be given away at Rogue Soul.

Read an interview and listen to Altered Natives’ mix for Sonic Router here.

Do not miss out on the chance to see “The Native” in action in Birmingham. Grab a free glass of bubbly on the way in and get ready for next-level business!

And watch out for ‘Tenement Yard Vol. 3′ coming soon!

Peace! See you on the 27th!

Lord Byron

OK, OK, I admit I’ve been slacking the last couple of weeks with the blog here… But I’ve been busy! Forgive me, it’ll all be worthwhile in the end. Figured I needed to do a little catch-up on all the music I’ve been listening to the last few weeks, so here goes:

This young scallywag Reapz Da Beatmaker recently got in touch, to share a collection of instrumental tracks he’s been working on. While it’s a little rough round the edges, that’s kinda the appeal of it, and there are some great ideas and tunes in there. A producer to keep an eye out for, for sure. The album is available for free download here.

Our good friends at Two Hungry Ghosts have released Volume 002 of their Frequency Module series of mixes, and if like me you enjoyed the first then you won’t be disappointed! Great selection yet again, blended perfectly into a life-changing mix of music you’ve never heard but will grow to love…

The Stan Smith remix competition is closed! Some of the entries are superb, here’s my pick of the bunch:

Jazzanova recently went into the GDR Rundfunk Orchestra studios in East Berlin with vocalist Paul Randolph to record a 14-track selection of some of their most popular tracks and remixes, and the CD/download was released today. The session was also video’d (find some of the tracks on the Jazzanova YouTube channel). The versions of ‘No Use’ and ‘Let It Go’ outdo the originals for me, awesome stuff. New from my mate Cyclonix, this little piano-based house ditty:

Less talk, more music… Here’s some other tracks and mixes I’ve been listening to:

Finally, if you ain’t seen this, where have you been?! Try to watch this without spending the following 3 hours singing it round your house.

Just thought I’d commemorate / promote this new event with a cheeky little mix for you all. It features nothing out of the ordinary for myself… Just good, honest music all the way. Take a listen and see if it doesn’t get you in the mood for coming down to see us in person.

Lord Byron’s also prepared a cheeky little mix of his own, which is also up on SoundCloud and also available to download… As you’ll hear, he has a very similar taste in music to myself, which means the music policy was fairly easy to agree on!

While I’ve got your attention, if anyone’s interested in helping out promoting the events, please get in touch via email!

You might have noticed things have got a little quieter round here the last week or two… I can only apologise. Now I’ve finally got my shoulder sorted, I’ve actually been quite busy!

Here are the fruits of my recent labours: A monthly broken beat and soulful house event, being run in conjunction with my good friend Lord Byron, at Poppy Red in Birmingham. It’ll be taking place on the last Sunday of every month, and opens 27th May with a guest appearance from Altered Natives!

I’ve added another tab at the top of the site, where I’ll be building a collection of details, photos and flyers. There’s also a Facebook Page and Group.

If you’d like any further information about this or future events, email info@rogue-soul.co.uk and myself or Byron will pick it up.

This will be the first event I’ve been directly involved in for a VERY long time, so as you can imagine, I’m quite excited! If nothing else, it gives me an excuse to record a special mix for you all, using both of my hands!

I trust I can rely on you all to attend. I will return with more good news very soon.

Peace!

If you’ve not managed to get out this weekend because of the weather, are considering going out in the week to make up for it, and are in the London area, you might like to get yourself down to Put Me On It Live on Wednesday 2nd May, where you will be entertained by Tawiah, Szjerdene, Morgan Zarate and Eric Lau.

Advance tickets here.

If you’re not available for the event, but would still like to check out some great music, head over to the ‘We Love’ section of the PMOI site for the latest collection of free downloads, kindly sourced and curated from the extremities of the world wide web for your pleasure.

You all know I enjoyed the last Bruk Up! back in March (photos & recording here)… Guess where I’ll be going on Saturday 5th May!

This time the elusive Afronaut (who I drove all the way to Nottingham to see a couple of years ago, only for him to rock up at 4am when I was leaving!) will be gracing the decks, replacing Daz-I-Kue as the compulsory BITA representative, and will be joined by Uprock’s Bunny Bread, Birmingham’s Sammy Goulbourne, and resident E Double D.

Get there EARLY! There are NO WARM UP SETS!

Tickets here / Facebook event details here.

If you still need persuasion to attend, watch this little sneak preview video recorded at the launch night…

Then listen to this promo mix that Afronaut recently recorded, which will give you an idea of what you can expect on the night:

This is one of the first releases that Jeremy Sylvester has released in a while using his own name instead of one of his many aliases… That alone should tell you that this is something special.

The track of the EP for me is ‘Doo Daa Day’, which is a quality slice of garage music that takes you back to Jeremy’s original early Club Asylum days.

‘Back To Bump’ is a new garage EP that reaches so far back through the annuls of garage history that you can practically smell the dubplates on your grubby fingers as you pull your hands back through the timewarp.

You can purchase it now through iTunes.
