UK Soul Jam was born at the Jazz Café in Camden, and is a celebration of UK Soul featuring the best of London’s & the UK’s Soul talent. Each year, they’ve been hosting a ‘Nu Jazz Special’ that highlights the UK’s Nu-Jazz & Soul-Jazz talent. This year, UK Soul Jam is thrilled to bring it’s ‘Nu Jazz Special’ to the legendary Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club.

April 29th’s show has a great line up including Nu Jazz master Kaidi Tatham, the multi instrumentalist artist/writer/producer/remixer who’s work reads like a who’s who of Soul, Jazz, NeoSoul & Dance music. In addition to Kaidi’s fresh and forward thinking solo albums, Kaidi also provides key elements in the music of 4hero, 2000Black, Bugz In The Attic & work with many more greats from Fertile Ground to Slum Village. Kaidi’s band will also feature Alex Bonfanti of Parl-Le + more special guests.

Strong support also on the night from Paul Weller’s bassist Yolanda Charles & her own Brit Funk band ‘The Deep Mo’, our UK/Brazilian favourite Heidi Vogel of Defected / The Cinematic Orchestra, and Bembe Seque of 4hero / 2000Black / Bugz In The Attic, NeoSoul-Jazz from Jazz Bailey, Soul-Jazz from Kate Threlfall PLUS more acts TBA & the infamous jam session open to the public later in the show.

I’m informed many of the tickets have already sold out, so head over to the Ronnie Scott’s site ASAP to purchase yours.

Tortured Soul‘s TSTC Records presents ‘Choice Cuts’, a compilation of timeless classics from Cooly’s Hot Box!

Formed in New York City’s thriving acid jazz scene during the 1990s by Tortured Soul’s lead singer and drummer, John-Christian Urich, and renowned soul singer Angela Johnson, Cooly’s Hot Box burst onto the scene with with ‘Don’t Throw My Love Around’, featured on the first Giant Steps compilation released by London’s Downtown Records. The song was later sampled for the main riff in Armand Van Helden’s ‘Funk Phenomena’, which rose to #1 on the Canadanian RPM Dance Chart and #38 on the UK Singles Chart in 1996. The band soon found themselves opening for the likes of B.B. King, A Tribe Called Quest, Zapp, The Neville Brothers, Guru, and India.Arie. After a series of singles and remixes, Cooly’s Hot Box released two full-length albums, ‘Take It’, and ‘Don’t Be Afraid: Get On’, to audience and critic rave reviews.

Cooly’s Hot Box formed the launch pad for the careers of Urich and Johnson, with Urich going on to form seminal live house act, Tortured Soul, and working with producers like Roger Sanchez and DJ Spinna and performing many hundreds of concerts worldwide. Johnson has since enjoyed international success as a solo artist and composer, releasing several albums and singles, and writing chart-topping hits for artists like Double (Japan).

If you’ve never heard Cooly’s Hot Box before, or if you’ve misplaced your original vinyl, TSTC Records has your back. Here are 14 Choice Cuts, culled from the albums and singles of Cooly’s catalog, re-released in their original sheen for your listening pleasure!

The album will be released on 08 May 2012. There’s a 25% discount, though, if you go to the BandCamp page to buy it right now!

Volume 2 in the series of guest mixes, this one’s from Moscow-based Lay-far, an up-and-coming DJ and producer who’s come from relative obscurity to being an influential one-to-watch both in his native Russia and further afield in just the last 12 months.

This mix contains a whole range of Lay-far’s favourite broken beat and house music of the moment as well as some of the tracks from his latest EP, ‘Detour’, out April 20th on Soul Imago.

Daz-I-Kue put together this mix for the special 80′s soul & boogie night at Atlanta’s number one monthly event “Spreadlove”, where he’ll be playing the party groove s along side premier DJ, producer, bredren and the man behind this top night… DJ Kemit.

Showing how good the music of the 80′s was, he randomly selected a bunch of 45′s from his 80′s soul collection and put together a mix of mainly party jams along side a few deeper grooves that would put a smile on your face and a spring in your feet.

Watch out for the A Taste Of Honey track… Could listen to that for days.

Haven’t really posted much Moombahton here on the blog, but I’ve been downloading whatever I could get my hands on for a while, and must admit there’s something quite refreshing about the sound in this Dubstep-heavy UK club scene…

Was in touch with Smutlee last week, and he pointed me in the direction of this EP by Munchi, ‘Moombahtonista’.

Munchi & Moombah LDN are currently on a bit of a tour promoting the EP, and, after returning from a trip to the WMC, on Friday 20th April 2012 will be at Hidden in London (click flyer for Facebook event):

EDIT: Event now cancelled, standby for further info.

As you can expect from the emergence of a new popular genre, there are an array of hot-yet-unknown DJs and producers making a name for themselves, and if 2011 wasn’t, then 2012 certainly could be the year that Moombahton reaches your musical consciousness. Try paying a visit to this blog for a little education.

You can cop the Moombahtonista EP here from iTunes, or at most other good download stores.

You know when you hear something that makes you stop everything else that you’re doing, just so that you can concentrate your entire effort on listening?

I’ve tried and tried to bring Two Hungry Ghosts to your attention over the last few months, but I get the feeling there are some of you who are still missing out. So I’m going to have to resort to bullying.

Listen to this selection of tracks, kindly put together by the Ghosts, right now.

This mix is seriously making me re-evaluate my whole future… Why bother trying to put any mixes together ever again? I can’t compete with this!

Once you’ve crossed over to the Two Hungry Ghosts site, promise me you’ll come back and visit some time? Or send a postcard? Please?
